From the
Northwest via Highway I-40
Take Interstate Highway 40.
It will become Route 132 / College Road as it enters Wilmington.
Follow College Road for a few miles, past the UNCW campus, and past Oleander
(Route 76).
After you pass Oleander, stay in your RIGHT hand lane. You will see a sign
that reads "STATE PORTS," and the lane will branch off to the right and
become Shipyard Boulevard. As you turn onto Shipyard you will see on the
right side the New Hanover Department of Aging Building, and shortly
thereafter, Hoggard High School on the same side. (If you should see a
Krispy Kreme donut shop on your right or a YWCA pool on your left, you have
gone too far. Turn right at the donut shop's corner and drive to the next
traffic light and turn left onto Shipyard.)
Follow Shipyard for several stoplights. You will pass a large cemetery on
the right (Greenlawn). Get into the RIGHT hand lane because you will need to
turn right at the next light which is Carolina Beach Road (there is a
McDonald's fast food restaurant on the corner on your right).
After turning right follow Carolina Beach Road to North Carolina Avenue.
Turn right onto North Carolina Avenue and follow street to back parking lot.
The phone number here is (910) 343-8209. Call if you get lost.
From the West via
highway 74, 76, or from the south via highway 17
Take Highway 74/76/17
across the Cape Fear River into Wilmington.
Get into the RIGHT hand lane before you cross the bridge because on the
other side of the bridge as you enter Wilmington, you will need to turn
right.
DO NOT TAKE the exit to the
"STATE PORTS" immediately after the bridge (an industrial road not
recommended for passenger cars), but instead,
Turn RIGHT at the first
traffic light after the bridge onto 3rd Street (there is a Burger King fast
food restaurant on the corner on the left).
After you turn right onto 3rd Street, you should stay in the left lane. You
will cross railroad tracks and there will be a slight turn to the right as
3rd Street becomes Burnett Boulevard and it passes Greefield Park on the
left.
The next traffic light will be where Carolina Beach Road branches off to the
left (this is also where the industrial "State Ports" road reconnects to
Carolina Beach Road).
As you turn left at the light, stay in the left lane. You will need to make
another LEFT turn at the third street past the traffic light. This is "North
Carolina Avenue." (If you should see Legion Stadium on your left or an
Advance Auto or Auto Zone Store on your right, you have gone too far. Turn
around and return to North Carolina Avenue and turn right.)
Follow North Carolina Avenue until it ends at the parking lot for the ALPER
CENTER of Elderhaus.
From the South
via Carolina Beach Road (Fort Fisher)
Take Route 132 North (which
becomes College Road) to Myrtle Grove Junction (there is a Wachovia Bank on
the near right corner, and a Burger King fast food restaurant on the far
left corner).
Stay in your LEFT lane and TURN onto Carolina Beach Road.
After you turn left onto Carolina Beach Road, you will pass the new WalMart,
Echo Farms, Independence Boulevard, a McDonald's Restaurant at Shipyard
Boulevard, and after that, Legion Stadium.
As you pass the stadium,
get into the RIGHT lane.
Turn RIGHT at "North Carolina Avenue." (If you should see Greenfield Park on
your right, you have gone too far. Turn around and return to North Carolina
Avenue and turn left.)
Follow North Carolina Avenue until it ends at the parking lot for the ALPER
CENTER of Elderhaus.
